Renville County Food Shelf

Olivia, MN -- On January 3, 2018, Central Region Cooperative Board Members Larry Dean, Jason Boll, and Brian Broderius presented a donation of $1,634 to the Renville County Food Shelf’s Board President, Ardis Wertish. The donation was composed of $817 from Central Region Cooperative in addition to a match donation of $817 from the Land ‘O Lakes Foundation. The Renville County Food Shelf feeds approximately 226 families per month. In the beginning of the New Year, all clients register with the food shelf and record the total pounds of food every pickup. The food shelf sources the majority of its food from Second Harvest but also works with local grocery stores when they begin to run short. Donations like this one will be used mainly to purchase food for the food shelf and have reduced the need for fundraising. Approximately 50 volunteers assist in operating the food shelf, and they have yet to turn anyone away. If interested in volunteering, please contact the food shelf at 320-523-5339.

Renville County Back-the-Pack Program

Olivia, MN -- On January 3, 2018, Central Region Cooperative Board Members Larry Dean, Jason Boll and Brian Broderius presented a donation of $1,000 to the Renville County Back-the-Pack Program. The donation was composed of $500 from Central Region Cooperative in addition to a match donation of $500 from the Land ‘O Lakes Foundation. The Back-the-Pack Program began over seven years ago when Betsy Hennen, a now retired Early Childhood Special Education teacher from BOLD, wanted to help feed the grumbling little stomachs that were coming to school while she was teaching. Hennen remarks, “The program is a win-win situation for everyone. A child with something in their belly can be more focused, will typically behave better and help create a better learning environment for our teachers and students.” The program is offered to all families with students attending BOLD, RCW, GFW, and BLHS school districts in preschool through 8th grade (varying among school district). The Back-the-Pack Program sends home 3 ½ pounds of food including two breakfasts, two meals for dinner, two fruits and two snacks to participating families every weekend throughout the school year to cover the meals when students are not in school. Participation in the program varies throughout the school year; however, currently 40 families are participating at BOLD, 31 at RCW, 38 at GFW and 40 at BLHS.
