In this edition of Energy Tidbits I’m going to switch it up and provide some BIO Diesel info rather than a market update.

In 2002 MN State Legislature passed a law requiring all diesel fuel sold in MN contain a minimum of 2% Biodiesel, this law officially went into effect on September 29th 2005. On May 1st 2009 this mandate was increased to 5% eventually changing again to 10% on July 1st 2014. On July 25th 2017 the Commissioners of both the Dept. of Ag and MN Pollution Control Agency determined there was adequate supply of Biodiesel to mandate an even higher minimum Biodiesel content, as a result on May 1st 2018 the Biodiesel mandate increased to 20%.

As it stands we are required by MN law to blend diesel at 10% April 1st through April 14th at which point our blends must contain no less than 20% BIO until October 1st. From October 1st through March 31st we are mandated to sell a minimum of 5% BIO in all diesel products with #1 on road and off road as well as #1 & #2 Fuel oil being excluded.

What is biodiesel?
  • Biodiesel is a clean burning renewable fuel derived from natural vegetables and fats.
  • Biodiesel is intended to be used as a replacement for petroleum diesel fuel and can be blended with petroleum diesel in any amount.
  • Biodiesel does not require modifications to a diesel engine.
  • Biodiesel reduces exhaust emissions versus petroleum diesel.
  • Biodiesel is biodegradable.
